Daytona Beach, FL - A 19-year-old Mainland High School student is charged, along with two other younger teens, for breaking into a Daytona home and stealing an AR-15 rifle, binoculars, and $1,000.
Daytona Beach police (DBPD) responded to a home on Lanvale Ave. in Daytona at around 1:57 PM on Monday in response to a burglary. A neighbor reported seeing two male suspects possibly breaking into the home and then leaving the area and heading into a ditch nearby.
The rifle, the $1,000 cash, and the binoculars were reported stolen from the home and were later found in a nearby wooded area in a backpack with a student's schoolwork with his name on it. The stolen items were returned to the owner.
At around 8:14 PM on Monday, DBPD responded again to the area where the backpack with the stolen items was located. Arrest reports say a Chevrolet Impala dropped off a boy, who was "running frantically in the rain in the same area that book bag was located while the Impala drove in circles around the neighborhood." The boy matched the description of one of the suspects.
The boy who was running in the wooded area was questioned by police and was determined to be the same student whose name was on the schoolwork. A traffic stop was conducted on the Impala, and officers found three people inside the car, including 19-year-old Mainland High School student, Joseph Summerall. There was a heavy odor of marijuana coming from the car, and marijuana was found under the seats. All three people inside were questioned about the burglary.
Out of the four people suspected of being connected with the burglary, three have been confirmed by DBPD to have been both arrested and charged in the case, including Summerall. The other two, who were both arrested and charged, are minors. Summerall is charged with armed burglary of a dwelling and contributing to the delinquency of a minor and was taken into custody on a total of $10,500 bond.
"We're very thankful because police were able to find the items that were stolen before the teenagers came back to retrieve what they had stolen," says Lyda Longa, Public Information Officer for DBPD. "This would have been a very powerful firearm in the wrong hands. We urge people to keep their firearms as secured as possible."
