Ormond Beach, FL-In the last two decades, a local backpack and school supply drive for needy kids has put together 88,000 packages for school children here. Now, the Jewish Federation of Volusia and Flagler Counties needs help to do the same this year. Jewish Federation Executive Director Gloria Max says she's concerned about the pace of donations now. The drive orders early and in bulk to get a discount on the backpacks and supplies, so Max says time is really a challenge.
Max says the drive gives backpacks filled with supplies to about 7 thousand needy local school children each year. Those students names are given to the group by local school counselors and administrators. Max says she has matching grants from two foundations but needs the donations to come in to determine how large the match will be. Max says for every dollar donated, the match will make that $2.
