Lightning At The Beach Means Get Out Of The Water

Volusia County, FL-The 4th of July weekend forecast is normal for summer, including afternoon thunderstorms. For beachgoers, that means being vigilant, especially in the afternoon. Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean  Rescue Senior Captain Tammy Marris asks beachgoers to listen to the lifeguards.

Marris said it's hard to get people out of the water when it's not raining. She says that many lightning strikes occur just prior to a thunderstorm. Lifeguards constantly monitor the weather so when they tell you to get out, you should move quickly.

Once the storm is past and lifeguards have determined it's safe, you can go back in the water but Marris asks that you wait until the lifeguards get back in position. She reminds beachgoers to always swim in front of a lifeguard. That way you will be alerted to problems more quickly.
