New Smyrna Beach, FL - Worried about Zika? Learn what you need to know at an informational seminar being held in New Smyrna Beach on Tuesday.

The Florida Department of Health (F-DOH) and Volusia County Mosquito Control are working together to present an informational seminar on the Zika virus. The event will be held at 2 PM on Tuesday, October 4, at the New Smyrna Beach Regional Library at 1001 S. Dixie Freeway.

Zika is a mosquito-borne virus simalar to dengue and West Nile virus, and it's been linked to serious birth defects like microcephaly when contracted by pregnant women. Local transmissions have been reported in Miami-Dade County and several travel related cases have already been reported in Volusia and Flagler Counties.

Dr. Paul Rehme, Director of Disease Control for F-DOH in Volusia County, will be at the event to talk about signs and symptoms of the virus, and to offer tips for protection and prevention.

Dr. Hong Chen, an Environmental Specialist with Volusia County Mosquito Control, will also be at the event. He'll share info on the different kinds of mosquitoes that can spread Zika, and he'll talk about the county's mosquito surveillance and control techniques.

A question and answer session will follow the presentation.

Reservations are not required for this event which is open to the public. For more info on the presentation, call the library at 386-424-2910, option 4.
