Volusia County, FL-The 4th of July is a blast for humans but not so for pets. Animal experts say it's safer to keep them home in a quiet place than take them outside where the noise is. Dr. Jennifer Green, Director of Veterinary Practices at the Halifax Humane Society said to be prepared before the fireworks start. Dr. Green said many dogs and cats are afraid of loud noises and hiding or running are their ways to escape the sound. Crating your pet can help and there are a number of devices on the market that help some pets. For some pets, medication is a way to keep them calm. Dr. Green asks that you contact your veterinarian if nothing else will calm your pet. Dr. Green advocates microchipping your pet. That way if they do escape, animal control or the local humane society can scan the information and reunite a pet with its owner very quickly. The service can be done at the Halifax Humane Society for a small fee.
