Jesus Mural In Downtown Daytona Knocked Down

Daytona Beach, FL - An iconic part of downtown Daytona Beach is no more. Demolition crews have knocked down the large "Jesus" mural which used to be atop the front doors of the old First United Methodist Church in downtown Daytona Beach.
The mural - which was created from around 80,000 pieces of glass glued to the exterior of the building - was done in the 1950's by the late Henry Saltzman, a prominent Daytona Beach area artist. The property on the corner of Palmetto Avenue and Bay Street was recently purchased by Consolidated-Tomoka Land Company and is being knocked down to make way for a new construction project meant to help revitalize the downtown area, part of which is expected to include apartments. Despite pleas to save the mural, company officials have said publicly that saving it wasn't an option because of the way it was created.
