Deltona, FL - A 15-year-old sophomore student at Pine Ridge High School in Deltona dies in a traffic crash just outside of the campus.

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office says it happened on Howland Boulevard near Pine Ridge High School earlier this morning (March 11th).

Five other people - including two children - were also hurt in the three-vehicle wreck which claimed the life of Joshua T. Durner, according to VCSO spokesperson Andrew Gant.

"Durner was eastbound on Howland Boulevard around 6:50 a.m. in a 2006 Hyundai Elantra when he turned into the school entrance in the path of a westbound 2017 Nissan Pathfinder," Gant noted. "The Pathfinder hit Durner’s vehicle and a 2015 Nissan pickup behind the Pathfinder was unable to avoid the crash."

The Pathfinder had four people on board at the time, including an adult male passenger, an adult female driver, a 3-year-old child and a 1-year-old child, per Gant.

"No charges or traffic citations are pending at this time," Gant added. "Durner was the sole occupant of his vehicle and did not appear to be wearing a seatbelt.

The children's injuries were minor, per Gant, while the woman suffered a hip injury and the man was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach for monitoring of his injuries.

The driver of the truck was also transported to AdventHealth Fish Memorial Hospital in Orange City with a minor back injury.

Grief counselors will be sent to the school to help students there cope with what happened, according to Gant.

VCSO closed Howland with crime tape between Courtland Boulevard and Trade Street for much of the morning as investigators processed the accident scene.
