Orange City, FL – An Orange City woman was arrested for crashing into her daughter’s car several times in a fit of road rage.

On Friday, September 9, Alicia S. Hawkins was driving to check the mailbox with her father, Richard F. Wharton, and a 1-year-old in the car. While stopped at the mailbox, Annette L. Wharton, Alicia’s mother, drove up and started arguing with Richard.

Alicia drove away down Chestnut Ave, but Annette followed at a high rate of speed. Alicia told deputies she had to drive off of the road way to avoid a collision.

Alicia then turned onto W Blue Springs Ave to try and get away from her mother, who continued to follow. Alicia breaked at a stop sign at W Blue Springs Ave and Carpenter Ave when Annette crashed into the back of her vehicle.

Alicia drove off, trying to get away from her mother again, but she still continued to follow.

As she approached Rhode Island Ave, traffic was backed up so Alicia was forced to come to a stop. Then Annette’s vehicle crashed into her rear bumper again. Annette then fled the scene.

Alicia and Richard both provided written statements of the incident to VCSO.

Annette’s vehicle was found by the Orange City PD in the Walmart parking lot at 2400 Veteran Memorial Pkwy. Annette told deputies she couldn’t remember what happened. The officer on scene noted that Annette had slurred speech, and inside her car he found an open beer can and a partially drank shot of vodka.

Annette was arrested for aggravated assault and aggravated child abuse.
