Flagler County, FL-A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place today to celebrate the opening of the interchange from Matanzas Woods Parkway to I-95.

The new interchange gives drivers another way to access busy areas like Palm Coast.

Flagler County PIO Julie Murphy says the need for the interchange dates to the wildfires of 1998 that prompted an evacuation order there. Those fires burned 71 homes and thousands of acres. The population in the area has grown sharply since then.

Murphy says the new access will likely spur economic development along Matanzas Woods Parkway.

County officials say the work was completed on budget and about a month ahead of schedule.
