DeLand, FL-The Volusia County School Board during its meeting last night in DeLand oked a plan to make up student days lost to Hurricanes Hermine and Matthew. The plan, already approved by the Florida Department of Education, includes students attending on what would have been the Presidents Day holiday on February 20. Students will go full days on what would have been five early release days on November 9, 16, 30 and December 7 and 14. Last Friday is a make up day that is already in the books. The approval of the make up days last night was unanimous. Before that vote, the board unanimously approved a plan to borrow $40 million for capital projects. That money will come from revenues from a half-cent sales tax approved by voters. The projects include the overhaul of Pierson Elementary School. Superintendent of Schools James Russell told the board that most of the spending ahead involves replacing what he called "antiquated" buildings.   2016 Southern Stone Communications Copyright
