Daytona Beach, FL-Recent local attention to the issue of homelessness here has led to a sold-out 7th annual Halifax Urban Ministries Blue Diamond Gala Saturday night. HUM's Ginny Kent, Director of Development and Community Relations, says she's seeing new names on the list people who have bought tickets to HUM's biggest fundraising event of the year. The gala is at The Club at Pelican Bay. This year's theme is a "Celebration of Hope".

The event has sold more than 250 tickets.

Kent says the event will honor, among others, Ray Salazar. He is the Past President of the United Way. Judi Winch, Executive Director of Food Brings Hope, will also be honored with an award.

Among current projects, HUM is working to open Hope Place. The former Daytona Beach elementary school, long empty, will offer transitional assistance for homeless families and unsheltered teenagers on their own.

Kent partially credits the sold out event to the Pelican Bay location, but also points to recent developments highlighting the issue of the local homeless. Kent says, "I definitely see a lot of new people on our list of attendees. So I'm sure that people in the community have realized the impact that homelessness has on our community and they're ready to step up and make a difference."
