Volusia County, FL-Update; Deputies have charged a homeless woman with setting her boyfriend on fire Saturday. 41-year-old Annie Harper is charged with multiple counts. She tried to tell deputies he set himself on fire. The victim is identified as 34-year-old Jeffrey Cathcart.

Earlier reporting below: The victim said it happened when he refused to give her drugs. Deputies are questioning a homeless woman after her boyfriend was set on fire. Investigators say the couple lives in a homeless camp in the woods off North Woodland Boulevard north of DeLand. The man was hospitalized with burns over half of his body earlier today.

Deputies responded to the scene around 4 PM after a caller to 911  said a woman had asked her to call because her boyfriend had gotten burned when they tried to start a fire. The woman was then seen pedaling away on her bicycle. The caller was still on the phone with 911 when she reported hearing faint screams coming from the woods. Other callers to Sheriff’s Dispatch then reported a naked man on the side of North Woodland Boulevard. He reportedly appeared to be in pain and yelling for help.

When emergency crews and deputies got to the scene the victim told them that his girlfriend had poured lighter fluid on him and set him on fire. He was taken to Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach and was expected to be transferred to Orlando Regional Medical Center’s burn unit.

The girlfriend was located at a nearby convenience store and taken into custody. She is being held on no bond at the Volusia County Branch Jail.
