Update: In Wednesday night's meeting, the Daytona Beach City Commission approved a $400,000 grant to build a homeless shelter and they unanimously appointed a member of the Volusia County Council to the board of First Step Shelter.
Commissioner Robert A. Gilliland cast the lone dissenting vote in the decision to give First Step Shelter a $400,000 grant to build the shelter off of US 92 on county-owned land across from Red John's Rd.
Volusia County Councilwoman Heather Post was appointed to First Step Shelter's board of directors in a unanimous vote.

On the agenda for the Daytona Beach City Commission’s next meeting is a plan to develop a homeless shelter and to appoint a member to the shelter’s Board of Directors.
The City Commission meeting will take place on March 15 at 6:00 PM at the City Commission Chambers, 301 S. Ridgewood Ave., Daytona Beach.
First Step Shelter, Inc. is asking the City Commission for a $400,000 grant to create a homeless shelter off US 92 across from Red John’s Road on county-owned land. This grant could be renewed every year for 4 years if approved.
Another plan on the agenda asks the City Commission to appoint Heather Post to the shelter’s Board of Directors. Post is a member of the Volusia County Council.
