Holly Hill Woman Arrested For Possessing Checks & SSNs Stolen From The Mail

Holly Hill, FL - A woman has been arrested after she was seen stealing mail from several mailboxes in Holly Hill and found in possession of numerous documents and mail belonging to other people. On March 22, Holly Hill police observed 41-year-old Karen Splain in the 800 block of State Avenue after receiving reports of a suspicious person carrying a blue backpack opening mailboxes in the area. The reporting party said he saw Splain reach into his mailbox and close it before walking southbound on State Avenue to another residence. He said Splain then stood by the roadway for about 20 minutes while she fidgeted with something in her hands. He did not believe Splain stole anything from him, but that she could have taken mail for his roommates. Police said that when asked to open her backpack, Splain hesitated to empty it out. According to the arrest report, Splain moved paperwork around in her bag as if to conceal items not belonging to her. Splain eventually emptied out her backpack which contained the following:
  • 14 checks (belonging/issued to various individuals) totaling approximately $4,658.24.
  • 3 void checks totaling approximately $712.65.
  • A Florida Driver’s license
  • A Blue Mastercard
  • Multiple vehicle sale invoices
  • A profit-sharing plan book containing sever employee’s names, dates of birth, and social security numbers (SSNs)
  • Numerous W-2 Forms
  • Numerous journals containing individual’s social security numbers, dates of birth, and account numbers
  • 1 counterfeit $20 U.S. dollar bill
Splain was arrested and charged with loitering, possession of counterfeit payment instrument, and unlawful possession of personal identification information. According to police, Splain was charged with unlawful possession of personal identification information in both 2016 and 2017.
