Daytona Beach, FL-Troopers say a 56-year-old hitchhiker was hit and killed Wednesday night by a semi truck as he tried to cross the southbound lanes of I-95 near Daytona Beach. The victim is identified as Thomas Mayo of Oak Hill.

FHP says a truck driven by a 61-year-old North Carolina man was southbound when the hitchhiker tried to cross from the median and stepped into the path of the truck.

That happened around 6:45PM near the 261 MM.

The driver of the truck was not hurt. FHP says an off-duty law enforcement officer on his way home had just called dispatch to report the hitchhiker. The accident happened moments later.

The crash remains under investigation.
