Halifax Health Daytona Offers New Recovery Program For Knee Surgery Patients

Posted

Daytona Beach, FL - The Halifax Health Center for Orthopedics in Daytona Beach has launched a new, faster recovery and rehabilitation program for total knee replacement surgery patients. The new program is known as "Enhanced Recovery After Surgery" (E.R.A.S), and Halifax Health is the only facility in Volusia County to offer the program. What makes the program unique is its multidisciplinary approach to recovery and the fact that it has patients up and walking within three hours after surgery is complete. Michelle Ransom, a registered nurse and orthopedic patient navigator for Halifax Health Center for Orthopedics says, “Studies show the earlier a patient ambulates after surgery, the better their outcome. Our goal at Halifax Health is to have patients up and walking within three hours after surgery. The sooner that happens, the sooner we can get that patient back home to the activities he or she loves most.” The E.R.A.S. recovery program started as a pilot program for total knee replacements conducted by a team of Halifax Health Center for Orthopedics clinical staff. The 90-day trial period showed that knee-replacement patients were able to return home within 24 to 48 hours after surgery. E.R.A.S. utilizes a multidisciplinary approach coordinated by an orthopedic patient navigator. Pre-operation educational classes are offered two days a week to prepare patients for their procedure. Patients are provided information on how to prepare prior to surgery, what to expect when they are admitted, and what to do when they return home. The equipment they will need once they are home is often delivered prior to the surgery. The benefits of E.R.A.S. include less opioids for pain relief, the fact that a catheter is not needed, and the chance to get up and walking within three hours after surgery.
