New Smyrna Beach, FL - On Saturday, February 17, at around 10 AM, a half-eaten shark was found on the beach at the New Smyrna Beach Inlet.
Senior Captain Tammy Marris with the Volusia County Beach Safety and Ocean Rescue said it was either a spinner or blacktip shark and was attacked by a larger predator. The type of predator is unknown as well as how far off-shore the shark was attacked.
Marris said that if you do see a beached animal to stay away from it and flag down a lifeguard or beach patrol officer. Often the animal may still be alive, and larger mammals, like whales, tend to thrash around when frightened.
Volusia County often sees an influx of sharks at this time of year because they migrate to the waters of Florida to mate and eat.
