Palm Coast, FL-The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) wants the public to know more about gopher tortoises and a conservation program to protect them. Local coordinator Alex Kalfin will lead an information workshop on July 21 in Palm Coast.

Kalfin said the gopher tortoise is not endangered...yet but it is on the Florida "threatened" species list and the workshop will offer information on to conserve tortoises in Florida. He said the tortoise burrow supports as many as 300 organisms that are vital to Florida's ecological system.

The goal of the workshop is to identify ways cities and counties can take part in protecting one of Florida's threatened species. Kalfin also asks residents to treat gopher tortoises as another creature in their yard, like squirrels and mockingbirds.

The workshop is on Thursday in Palm Coast at the Hammock Community Center and begins at 9 A.M.

The workshop is free, but registration is required as space is limited. To register, send your name and your organization’s name to Alex.Kalfin@MyFWC.com.
