Flagler County, FL – The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) is warning residents about a phone scam going around scaring people into thinking they have outstanding arrest warrants and unpaid dues.
Several concerned citizens have notified the FCSO that they are receiving calls from someone claiming to be a deputy and that they are told they have an active warrant for their arrest for an unpaid debt, missed jury duty, or other minor infraction. The caller says that a payment must be made through wiring money through Western Union, MoneyGram or by purchasing a prepaid credit card.
The FCSO says these phone calls are scams and that the Sheriff’s Office would not contact you via telephone if you have an active warrant and would never accept money over the phone to clear criminal charges.
“I can assure you, if you have a warrant for your arrest in Flagler County we are not going to try to resolve it over the phone,” said Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly. “If you have a warrant in Flagler County you will be arrested by one of our deputies and brought to the Green Roof Inn. Don’t fall for this scam.”
If you do receive a call from someone claiming to be a deputy, police officer, lawyer or bounty hunter and they say they have a warrant for your arrest, make sure to verify whom you are speaking with first. These scammers manipulate the caller ID to make the call seem like it is coming from the FCSO or the jail.
