Flagler County, FL - A middle school sports program is coming to Flagler County schools after a unanimous agreement between the School Board, Flagler County Sheriff's Office (FCSO) and the Sheriff's Police Athletic League (PAL).

“This is a great way to get middle school students involved in positive activities when their school day ends and build positive relationships with adult mentors, both deputies and coaches,” says Flagler Sheriff Rick Staly. “It’s important for kids to have positive options to choose from that build sportsmanship and leadership and sports are a great way to get involved and stay healthy.”

At Tuesday's Flagler County School Board meeting, it was agreed that the PAL will be in charge of the sports program and will assign coaches and the School Board will arrange transportation and facilities.

"We have been working on this since Sheriff Staly took office,” says Trevor Tucker, School Board Chair. “This is a great partnership between the school system, PAL and the Sheriff’s Office for our kids.”

During the upcoming 2017-2018 school year at Buddy Taylor Middle School and Indian Trails Middle School, girls volleyball, boys wrestling and co-ed cross country will be offered in the fall. In the winter, students can participate in boys and girls basketball and in spring, boys and girls track and field. Cheerleading, or Spirit Squad, will be offered all year.

More information on registering will be announced on social media soon by PAL and the middle schools involved and during the annual Back to School Jam at Flagler Palm Coast High School on July 29 from 10 AM to 1 PM. Students will also be sent home with information regarding the new sports program when school begins, according to the FCSO's Public Affairs Officer, Brittany Kershaw.

"The middle schools have never had a sports program before so when Sheriff Staly took office, he made it a point to try to get after school sports into the middle schools," says Kershaw.
