Flagler Inmates & Detention Deputies Stop Inmate From Committing Suicide

Posted

Flagler County, FL - Fast acting inmates and Detention Deputies stopped an inmate from hanging himself at the Flagler County Detention Facility on Monday afternoon.

CCTV video shows the inmate tie a bed sheet to the handrail in a stairwell in the G-block then tied the sheet around his next. He then climbed over the railing and tried to jump, but other inmates quickly ran over and stopped him from falling, preventing the suicide attempt. Inmates and Detention Deputies then pulled the inmate back over the railing and took the bed sheet off of his neck.

The inmate was taken to the hospital for treatment and evaluation.

“Our Detention Facility has fencing on the second floor of the cell blocks in order to prevent falls or suicide attempts,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “Due to the location of the security of the catwalk, this inmate attempted to hang himself from the handrail on the stairs. Thankfully other inmates and Detention Deputies reacted quickly and were able to save him. I commend the inmates and deputies heroic actions for helping save a life together.”

The inmates who helped stop the suicide attempt will be recognized by Sheriff Staly and officially thanked for their assistance. According to the Flagler County Sheriff's Office, the inmates involved in the incident have not been convicted and are awaiting trial.
