Flagler FL Hospital Physicians Donate $5K For Lifesaving Defibrillators

Posted
Palm Coast, FL – Physicians from the Florida Hospital in Flagler have donated $5,000 to purchase six new defibrillators to put in the hospital. The physicians in the medical executive committee dedicated the machines to the hospital because a defibrillator can be lifesaving. An automated external defibrillator (AED) can be used to give a heart a normal rhythm with electric shocks after it stops beating during situations like cardiac arrest. If conditions like cardiac arrest go untreated, a patient can die in minutes, and 95% of sudden cardiac arrest patients do. With every minute that goes by during cardiac arrest, the chance of surviving drops 10%. These machines are meant for use by everyone, not just nurses and doctors. The machine sends information to a computer which decides whether to act or not and if an action must be taken, it tells the user to shock the patient. “This is a significant donation and a potentially lifesaving one at that,” says Florida Hospital Flagler Foundation executive director, John Subers. “Heart disease is the No. 1 reason Americans die, causing about one in every four deaths.” “With this generous donation from our physicians, our patients, visitors and staff will have ready access to an automated external defibrillator when minutes counts during a sudden cardiac arrest," says Subers. "We are so appreciative to the medical executive committee for their support and allowing these automated external defibrillators to be purchased.”
