Incumbents Dominate In Flagler Special Election

Bunnell, FL - It was an incumbents kind of day for elected officials in Flagler County.

According to the Flagler Supervisor of Elections website, Bunnell residents re-elected Bill Baxley with 43.36% of the vote during tonight's (March 5th) special election, while newcomer Donald Nobles secures the open seat on the City Commission vacated by Elbert Tucker.

As for the special election for the other Bunnell City Commissioner opening, Jan Reeger beat Daisy M. Henry by just two votes, with Tina-Marie Schultz a close third. She'll fill the remainder of John Sowell's term.

Bunnell also had seven charter amendments on the ballot. All seven were approved, including Amendment 6, which got through by just 13 votes. Some of those focused on salary increases for commissioners, the selection process for vice-mayor and how a city manager is selected.

Turnout in Bunnell was just under 17% of registered voters.

In Flagler Beach, incumbents Jane Mealy and Rick Belhumeur beat out challengers Paul Eik and Deborah Phillips for the two open city commissioner spots. Voter turnout in the city was just over 24%.

In Beverly Beach, Debra Wingo was top vote-getter for the three open town commission seats, winning 30.81% of the vote. Fellow incumbent Jeffrey Schuitema also won re-election, while incumbent Larry Mathies was knocked out by Douglas O’Connor.

Turnout in Beverly Beach was just under 38% of registered voters.
