Flagler Beach PD Has Some Tips When Approaching Flashing Traffic Signals

Posted

Flagler County, FL - As Hurricane Irma impacts our area, the possibility of power outages increases dramatically, and power outages mean that traffic signals can become inoperable or may become flashing intermittent red or yellow signals.

Below is some information from the Flagler Beach Police Department in order to educate motorists about power outages in regards to traffic lights.

One Florida Statute specifically addresses vehicles approaching intersections in which traffic lights are inoperative. It reads as follows:

"The driver of a vehicle approaching an intersection in which the traffic lights are inoperative shall stop in the manner indicated for approaching a stop intersection. A violation of this statute is a non-criminal traffic infraction, punishable as a moving violation."

If drivers approach an illuminated flashing red or yellow signal used in a traffic sign or signal, the drivers should do the following:

  • At a flashing red stop signal, the drivers should stop at a clearly marked stop line. If there are no clearly marked stop lines, drivers should stop before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection. If there are no crosswalks, then stop at the point nearest to the intersecting roadway, before entering the intersection, where you have a view of approaching traffic. The right-of-way rules are the same rules that apply at a stop sign.
  • At a flashing yellow light (caution signal), proceed through the signal only with caution.

If you have any questions, please contact Chief Doughney or any member of the Flagler Police Department.
