New Smyrna Beach, FL - Florida Hospital New Smyrna will celebrate National Healthcare Decisions Day to encourage people to plan ahead and discuss future healthcare decisions.

The community is invited to join hospital staff on Wednesday, April 20 from 8 AM to noon at the Schildecker Lobby at 401 Palmetto St., New Smyrna Beach. Nursing students from Daytona State College School of Nursing will be there to help guests fill out forms. These advance care plans, sometimes known as advance directives or living wills, allow people to dictate what they want in terms of future medical care.

National Healthcare Decisions Day is designed to "bring awareness to advance care plans, and encourage people to express their individual wishes regarding healthcare," said Lindsay E. Rew, Community Information Specialist at Florida Hospital New Smyrna.

"As a result of National Healthcare Decisions Day, many more people in our community can be expected to have thoughtful conversations about their healthcare decisions and complete reliable advance directives to make their wishes known," said Robin Roberts, Florida Hospital New Smyrna Manager of Case Management. "Fewer families and healthcare providers will have to struggle with making difficult healthcare decisions in the absence of guidance from the patient, and healthcare providers and facilities will be better equipped to address advance healthcare planning issues before a crisis and be better able to honor patient wishes when the time comes to do so."
