FL Gas Prices Plunge As State Recovers From Irma; Prices Could Drop Further

Posted

Florida - Prices at the gas pump continue to fall in Florida as the state recovers from Hurricane Irma, and according to AAA, that declining trend should continue this week and possibly through the Fall. Since prices hit a peak of $2.73 on September 14, prices for a gallon of regular gas in Florida have declined for 18 consecutive days as of Monday. According to AAA, prices fell 5 cents last week and should also fall another 5-10 cents this week. Despite the decline, gas prices are still about 47 cents more than this time last year. Local, state, and national averages are all currently higher than this time last year. "No need to rush to the pump, gas prices should get even cheaper as the week progresses," Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA Auto Club Group says. "Prices are still inflated after hurricanes Irma and Harvey, but will keep falling as refinery operations, supplies, imports and exports return to normal. Pump prices have another 20 cents to fall before reaching equilibrium. Expect another 5-10 cent drop this week." Jenkins says the gas price plunge is all due to hurricane recovery. Prices for a gallon of regular in Daytona Beach stood at $2.64 per gallon as of Monday. The state average was slightly lower at $2.609, and the national average is even lower at $2.55. "Gas prices are already so inflated that this should be just a constant trend through the fall with lower gas prices, and there's a good chance that we could see some of the lowest gas prices of the year before the year is over," he explains. The highest gas prices on record are $4.11 nationally and $4.079 for Florida, according to AAA. Both those records were hit in July of 2008. Copyright Southern Stone Communications 2017.
