DeLand, FL - A Pierson man gets placed in Volusia County Jail for driving under the influence of alcohol after troopers determine he was legally impaired when he ran over and killed an elderly man with his truck.

29-year-old Bruno Torres is held on $51,000 bond on a DUI manslaughter charge following yesterday's (October 12th) traffic incident, which happened around 2:30 p.m. on Senic Avenue near Glenwood Road in DeLand.

The Florida Highway Patrol says Torres was behind the wheel of a 2006 GMC pickup heading east on Glenwood when he attempted to turn north onto Senic and drove off road into the yard of 83-year-old Donnie Meyers.

FHP Lieutenant Kim Montes says Meyers was doing yardwork when the truck came through and ran him over, killing him at the scene.

"Torres provided a breath sample for the DUI test of .169% (blood alcohol content)," Montes added. "The legal limit is .08%."

Torres wasn't injured in the crash, per the FHP report.

VCJ records show Torres has been booked there three other times since October 2015. Each time, it was for aggravated battery on a pregnant person. He was also charged in one of those incidents with resisting an officer without violence.
