FHP: Motorcyclist Killed After Hitting Jeep On I-95

Port Orange, FL - Troopers are investigating after a 19-year-old Apopka man is killed in an accident on Interstate 95 in Volusia County early this morning, forcing its closure for most of the overnight.

The Florida Highway Patrol was called the scene on the northbound side near Mile Marker 252 around 1 o'clock. That's just north of the Pioneer Trail overpass, close to the Port Orange-New Smyrna Beach border.

FHP tells us the 2017 Yamaha motorcycle driven by Corey Ross split in two from the force of the impact against a 2015 Jeep driven by 32-year-old Dominic Robinson of Palm Bay.

According to the accident report, both vehicles were heading north on I-95 when the Yamaha approached the Jeep from behind and ran into its left rear, ejecting Ross - who was wearing a helmet - in the process. He died at the scene.

The Jeep veered left from the impact, going off the road and striking a tree, per FHP.

Robinson and his passenger - 25-year-old Candace Powers of Melbourne - both ended up at Halifax Health Medical Center needing treatment. Robinson is in serious condition, while Powers has minor injuries, according to troopers.

Both people in the jeep were wearing seat belts and all three - including Ross - did not appear to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, per the report.

The accident forced overnight I-95 northbound drivers to detour onto side roads for at least four hours before FHP reopened those lanes just before sunrise.
