FHP: Driver Who Hit Teen Leaving School Bus Not At Fault

UPDATE (09-04-18): The 17-year-old has been identified by FHP as Jalyn Clavizzao of Deltona.

Earlier reporting below.

Deltona, FL - It appears the driver who hit a Volusia County Schools student moments after she got off a school bus won't be cited or charged in that incident.

The Florida Highway Patrol says a 17-year-old female is now in serious condition at Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford with a head injury following a crash around 3:40 this afternoon on DeBary Avenue near Coventry Estates Boulevard. That's east of Interstate 4 and just north of Lake Monroe.

FHP Lieutenant Kim Montes says a 2009 Hyundai driven by 59-year-old Angel Berrios Santiago of Deltona was heading eastbound on DeBary Avenue in the right lane when the teen walked in front of his vehicle, striking her with the front of it.

"We had a school bus that was stopped west on DeBary Avenue off-loading children," Montes added. "DeBary Avenue is a divided highway and it's got a 5-foot raised cement median, so vehicles traveling eastbound under Florida law are not required to stop for a stopped school bus."

Per Montes, the yet-to-be-identified teenager got off the bus and walked north across the eastbound and westbound lanes without using a crosswalk when she was hit.

Santiago wasn't hurt and cooperated with troopers, according to Montes.

"Preliminary investigation shows that the driver is not at fault in this crash," Montes noted.

The teenager's injuries aren't life-threatening.
