Ormond Beach, FL – Charges are pending after a 39-year-old Deltona man dies in an accident on U.S. 1 in Ormond Beach.
It happened around 8:30 last night (August 25th) near Gowers Street, around half a mile east of where U.S. 1 meets Interstate 95.
Florida Highway Patrol Lieutenant Kim Montes says troopers were initially called to the scene to check on reports of a vehicle striking a pedestrian.
“The pedestrian was pronounced deceased on scene,” Montes added.
According to the accident report, a 2009 Dodge pickup truck driven by 61-year-old David Crabtree of Ormond Beach was heading southbound on U.S. 1 when the man who died – since identified as Charles Hammett – walked right in front of the truck.
FHP says Hammett was walking on the southbound shoulder but facing northbound when he was struck and killed by the front right side of the truck.
Crabtree wasn’t hurt and didn’t appear to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, but Hammett did, per the FHP report.
