crosswalk-and-yellow-lane Ormond Beach, FL - The FL Department of Transportation has scheduled a public hearing to discuss pedestrian crossing improvements along SR-5A, or Nova Rd, from Sterthaus Dr to Wilmette Ave in Ormond Beach. The public meeting will be held on Thursday, October 27, from 6 to 7:30 PM on the 2nd floor of the Trails Club House at 201 Main Trail, Ormond Beach. A short presentation will be given at 6:30 to review the 3 options being recommended by FDOT. Those 3 options are:
  1. Don't make any changes.
  2. Add 3 raised median refuge islands with a visible path for pedestrians to make a 2-stage crossing within the center 2-way left turn lane. Those island would be at Sterthaus Dr and N Old Kings Rd, N Old Kings Rd and Shadow Lanes Blvd, and N Old Kings Road and Wilmette Ave. There would be no crosswalks or other pedestrian features.
  3. Add a raised median and possibly a traffic signal. The raised median would be from Sterthaus Dr to Wilmette Ave and if a traffic signal were added it would be at N Old Kings Rd and would include crosswalks and other pedestrian features.
The public is being encouraged to give feedback and comment cards will be provided at the meeting. "The Florida Department of Transportation finds that pedestrian safety is a top priority, especially in Volusia County," said Jennifer Horton, Public Information Specialist with FDOT. "We always make safety our number 1 priority  and we're always trying to be very in tune with our pedestrians and our cyclists." After the meeting, FDOT will coordinate with the city of Ormond Beach to discuss what was learned in the public hearing. From there, a recommended alternative will be developed. map
