DeLand, FL – At an upcoming public hearing, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will discuss plans for a new bridge over the St. Johns River.

At 5:30 PM on Tuesday, August 29, the public is invited to the Sanborn Activities and Event Center located at 815 S. Alabama Ave., DeLand, to take part in a discussion about the bridge’s design. The first part of the hearing is an open house to provide attendees with information about the project and the opportunity to talk about the project with staff.

At 6 PM, there will be a short presentation and an opportunity for the public to comment. After the presentation ends at 7:30 PM, attendees will be able to ask staff questions and discuss the project further.

The project will be built along State Road 44 from the west side of Lake County Road 42 to the east side of Volusia’s Ed Stone Park. The 0.5-mile project will include the reconstruction of two-lane rural roadway bridge approaches, replacement of the traffic signal at the intersection of S.R. 44 and C.R. 42 and moving the location of the Pier 44 Marina.

The new design allows room for a multi-use 12-foot trail to be added at a later date. The design will also change the access points of Ed Stone Park, St. Johns Marina, Old New York Avenue, and Shady Oaks. The changes are expected to make accessing S.R. 44 safer.

The improvements are expected to be completed in Spring 2018. The right-of-way acquisition will be funded during the fiscal years of 2018 and 2019 while the construction will be funded in 2020.
