DeLand, FL-FDOT is holding an informational open house Thursday night to help educate the public about the roundabout project on SR 44 near DeLand and about roundabouts in general. The event is 5:30-7PM at First Christian Church of DeLand at 1401 W. New York Avenue also known as SR 44. FDOT is currently building a roundabout at the intersection of SR 44 and Grand Avenue west of DeLand. That was the scene of an accident that killed a grandmother and three small children earlier this year. FDOT's Jennifer Horton says crewmembers working on that project will be available to answer questions. Horton says FDOT is moving toward using traffic roundabouts where they are seen as a safety improvement over a conventional intersection. Horton says studies show a roundabout causes traffic to slow through the area and reduces accidents by big margins over traffic lights at intersections. Horton points out that a roundabout is not always appropriate but will be used by FDOT where it makes sense for safety. 2016 Southern Stone Communications Copyright
