Flagler County, FL - The Flagler County Sheriff's Office is warning residents that the holiday season always brings a spike in mail theft.

FCSO has already received several reports of holiday thefts, both of incoming and outgoing mail.

Palm Coast US Postal Service Postmaster Jim Davis says his office is aware of the recent mail thefts, a crime that's more prevalent during the holidays as thieves look for money, gift cards, and valuable gifts to nab. Davis said local postal carriers are delivering packages early in the day to try and get to residents before they leave for work. He also said carriers are delivering until early evening due to the increase in mail.

To help reduce mail thefts, don't send valuables, like cards with money, in your outgoing mailbox. Instead, use local US Postal Service collection boxes or post office drive-up boxes.

“This is the time to be extra vigilant. Criminals are looking for unsuspecting victims to prey upon,” Sheriff James L. Manfre said. “Please be extra cautious and aware, when you’re shopping, parking in public places and with your mail and holiday packages. It only takes a few extra minutes to prevent becoming a victim of crime.”

Stealing from or defacing mailboxes is a federal crime. Violators could face a fine of up to $250,000 and up to 3 years in prison, for each act of theft/vandalism.
