FCSO Internal Investigation Leads To Firing & Resignation

Bunnell, FL - The just-released results of an internal investigation has a Flagler courthouse deputy on the verge of being fired and a long-time courthouse sergeant who opted to retire and resign before he could be fired.

Documents released by Sheriff Rick Staly today (September 5th) show that Deputy John Freshcorn - an 11-year Flagler County Sheriff's Office veteran - used racial slurs while on the job as a bailiff and also joked about a fellow deputy having child porn on his cell phone.

"Racism and racist comments have no place in law enforcement or the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office and will not be tolerated," Staly noted.

Freshcorn now has 10 days to appeal his termination.

Sergeant John Bray - who has spent over 25 years at F-C-S-O - decided to officially resign Tuesday after he had filed for retirement through the state's DROP program last September, according to FCSO Chief Mark Strobridge.

"Sergeant Bray had participated in and allowed an unacceptable work atmosphere to prevail in the courthouse," Strobridge added. "Sheriff Staly expects all employees of the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office to conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times. The use of racial slurs, racism, unbecoming conduct or untruthful behavior will not be tolerated."

The investigation also led to a commander's transfer from the courthouse to the jail.
