FBPD Warns Residents About Phone Scam Targeting Irma Victims

Posted

Flagler Beach, FL – The Flagler Beach Police Department (FBPD) is warning residents about an active phone scam targeting individuals impacted by Hurricane Irma.

The FBPD says that they have received a few calls about the phone scam but, luckily, no one has fallen victim to it yet. According to police, the caller will say they are with the “Government” or “Federal Government” at the “Federal Department of Grants.” The caller will say that you qualify for grant money to help you recover from Hurricane Irma and will then ask for your personal information.

The FBPD warns that no Federal Government employee will ever call you about grant money, especially for a grant that you never applied for. They advise residents who receive these scam phone calls to not tell anyone their personal information over the phone and to hang up and call local law enforcement.

“Plain and simple, I hope this information prevents victims.,” says FBPD Chief Matt Doughney. “These “scammers” or vultures are preying on those that are recovering from a major life-changing event. The best way to prevent victimization is to be aware, be alert and then spread the word!”

If you have questions about this scam, you can call Chief Doughney at 386-517-2024. For information on similar phone scams, head to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services’ website.
