Heber-Overgaard, AZ - An Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University professor and his son were killed in a plane crash at a fly-in community in Arizona.

ERAU President P. Barry Butler confirmed the passing of Randall J. Lynch - a retired United States Navy Captain - and his father, Jay A. Lynch, late this morning (November 18th).

"Randy was a much-admired and well-respected friend and mentor to many in our community," Butler added. "Details regarding a memorial service will be forthcoming. Please keep the Lynch family in your thoughts and prayers at this difficult time."

Randall was a former Commander of the Naval ROTC Unit at ERAU's Daytona Beach campus.

Officials in Navajo County, Arizona say the Lynches were on board a small plane when it crashed into a home in Heber-Overgaard just before 5 p.m. Friday (November 16th).

"This crash was discovered when a resident came home and noticed damage to his house in the subdivision," stated a Facebook post from the Navajo County Sheriff's Office. "Upon checking the area, he located the plane crash a short distance from his house."

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
