Daytona Beach, FL - Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University has developed the first program certification of its kind designed specifically to help aviation and aerospace professionals protect the aviation industry from hackers. The university announced at the 2017 Paris Air Show this week that it will offer a new Aviation Cybersecurity Certificate program that will address aircraft systems and their infrastructure that supports them. The program can be taken on campus or online. Embry-Riddle President Dr. P. Barry Butler says, "Embry-Riddle is in the unique and trusted position as the higher education leader in aviation and cybersecurity to arm industry manufacturers and operators with the most proactive, advanced, and up-to-date strategies in dealing with potential attacks on their infrastructure." The new cybersecurity program will discuss basic security concepts, existing standards and best practices, computer system security concepts such as Global SWIM, and components such as aeronautical Information Exchange Model (AIXM) and Flight Information Exchange Model (FIXM), and technology challenges like ADS-B. The program will cover navigation and communications systems, even ones that are in development, such as Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B), Instrument Landing System (ILS), Federal Aviation Administration System Wide Information Management and Next Gen, and Single European Sky ATM Research (EU SESAR). The Cybersecurity Certification was spearheaded by Dr. Remzi Seker, Embry-Riddle Professor and Director of the Cybersecurity and Assured Systems Engineering (CyBASE) Center. "This continuing education opportunity we are providing is vital to the security and development of the in-the-know industry professionals to stay on top of today's cybersecurity challenges in the aviation and aerospace domain," says Seker.
