Daytona Beach, FL - The Daytona State College women’s golf team has earned its 10th NJCAA championship after coming out on top during a four-day competition at the Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Arizona.

The team, led by head coach Laura Brown, scored 1152 over four rounds, finishing even par. The women also beat their closest competition score by 40 strokes and posted a new NJCAA national championship four-round event record by beating out Redlands Community College’s record low score of 1176 posted in 2012.

“This is a tremendous win for Coach Brown and her team,” said DSC President, Thomas LoBasso. “Our women’s golf program has become a dominant force in the NJCAA on and off the course. We’re very proud to add another national championship to the program’s credentials as well as another year of success in the classroom.”

Sophomore Falcons Jiwon Jeon, of South Korea, and Grace St-Germain, of Ontario, Canada, posted the team’s lowest scores at 280 (-8) each. The pair finished in a 67-67 tie for first place at the end of regulation play and set an NJCAA record for a low score during this particular championship event. Sophomore Kendall Johnson, of Plant City, carded a 77 and freshman Alison Crenshaw, of Suwanee, Georgia, carded a 75 in the final round, securing a 287 team score.

Once securing their team’s title, Jeon and St-Germain played against each other in a sudden death round. Both players birdied the first two holes. On the third hole, St-Germain carded a par for a 280 total and Jeon birdied for a 280 total, becoming the first place tournament medalist.

Each of the five DSC competitors placed in the top 10 and NJCAA All-American honors. Jeon finished in 1st place, St-Germain finished in 2nd place, freshman Hollie Muse, of Liverpool, England, finished in 5th place at 297, Johnson finished in 6th place at 301, and Crenshaw finished in 10th place at 307.

“This was an unbelievable performance on a very difficult course! This was a true team effort, as all five players contributed to this victory and I am very proud of all of them. This is the best team on record in the 20-year history of the program and to set these records during out 10th National Championship was very special,” said Brown. “Jiwon and Grace had an incredible week and they battled hard until the end for the title. The 3 hole playoff was very exciting and it was great to see how both these players handled the situation. I am so happy for both of them!”

This win is DSC’s tenth title in 16 seasons at the NJCAA Women’s Golf National Championships. Since 2010, DSC has earned seven NJCAA championships and finished outside first or second place only once during that time. The team’s head coach, Laura Brown, is New Smyrna Beach native and a former LPGA tour card holder. During more than 20 seasons at DSC, Brown has coached 77 All-Americans, seven NJCAA Individual National Champions, one Olympian, and one LPGA tour card holder (Tiffany Chan).

“Coach Brown is a great leader, as she’s proven yet again this year by coaching such great performances from her team,” said DSC athletics director, Will Dunne. “All of our Lady Falcons put in a great effort and we are proud of their accomplishments. We’re looking forward to our returning sophomores coming back this fall so we can continue the high level of competition this program is known for.”

DSC Falcons also dominate in the classroom. DSC has earned six FCSAA Female Academic Team of the Year awards and four NJCAA National Academic Team of the Year awards in the last decade. The Falcons are expected to repeat both academic titles this year with a 3.68 cumulative team GPA in the Fall 2017 and Spring 2018 semesters.
