Daytona Beach, FL - Daytona State College (DSC) honored 20 of its employees, students and law enforcement officers for their life-saving response to emergency incidents as part of the Campus Safety Department's 10th Annual Wall of Fame program, held on April 14.

The recognition highlighted Campus Safety Awareness Day, held each spring to promote a safe and secure collegial environment. Hosted by DSC’s Campus Safety Department, the event coincides with others nationwide commemorating the anniversary of the Columbine and Virginia Tech shootings.

"We honor our Wall of Fame heroes not only for their action, but for their awareness, because they saw and said and did something to make a difference in the lives of others," said DSC President Tom LoBasso.

Daytona Beach Police Department Deputy Chief Jakari Young was on hand to introduce command staff members and pledge the department’s continued strong relationship with the college under the leadership of newly appointed police chief, Craig Capri. “My one message here this morning is to reassure you that the relationship we have enjoyed the past 10 years under the leadership of Chief Chitwood will be just as strong under this new regime at the police department.”

Campus Safety Director Bill Tillard noted the continued planning efforts and safety enhancements that have become ingrained in the college culture have resulted in reductions in campus crime and incidents over the past 3 years.

“That speaks to all our efforts in working toward the same goal,” he told those gathered for the event. “It’s about seeing something, saying something. It’s about being prepared, being aware and understanding that campus safety is everyone’s responsibility.”

The Wall of Fame program recognizes students and college employees who have demonstrated exemplary behavior during a campus safety-related matter.

This year’s honorees are:

  • Sharon Ielfield , a longtime DSC Judicial Affairs coordinator and friend of Campus Safety who will retire this summer.
