Daytona Beach, FL – The Department of Health in Volusia County (DOH-Volusia), which is headquartered in Daytona Beach, says the County’s rate of sexually transmitted diseases is increasing.
The recent DOH-Volusia report, which gathered data from 2013 to 2017, focused on the prevalence of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. According to the report, 10 to 29-year-olds, black residents, and people living in the Daytona Beach and Holly Hill areas have the highest occurrence of chlamydia and gonorrhea. While syphilis rates decreased in 2017, they were previously on the rise since 2013.
DOH-Volusia reminds residents that all three of the STDs mentioned are treatable with antibiotics. If left untreated, these diseases can impact a person’s long-term health and can potentially affect the health of a pregnant woman’s baby.
These diseases often have no symptoms and go untreated. DOH-Volusia also emphasizes the potential for the diseases to be spread. It is recommended that all sexually active people, especially teenagers and those in their 20s, get routine testing.
