DeLand, FL-Deputies say the story told by a 19-year-old Deltona man that he was shot and wounded by strangers who told him to get out of the roadway has turned out to be false. The investigation by deputies found it was a case of an attempted drug rip-off that went wrong. A suspect is under arrest.
VCSO says 24-year-old Christopher Cattaneo was arrested Friday night at his Deltona home and says the suspect admitted he fired shots at 19-year-old Tyler Sheaffer in the altercation in Deltona April 16.
The investigation found that a friend in the car with Sheaffer that night had agreed to sell $12o worth of marijuana to an acquaintance. The man didn't have any marijuana, so filled a baggie with grass clippings, and put it in a mason jar. Three people, including Sheaffer, went to meet the buyer. Cattaneo was with the buyer and another friend. The seller then sold the bogus pot to the buyer who quickly realized he had been ripped off. Deputies say a car chase began. At one point , the buyer's car cut off the vehicle Sheaffer was in and that's when Cattaneo got out and fired a gun several times
Investigators also found the shooting didn't happen where Sheaffer had claimed it did and instead happened about a half a mile away.
Cattaneo is charged with three counts of attempted second-degree murder and one count of shooting into an occupied vehicle. He is held at the VCBJ on no bond.
