Deltona Man Arrested After Gun Battle With Neighbor

Deltona, FL - A Deltona man is free on $25,000 bond this morning, less than 24 hours after the Volusia County Sheriff's Office charged him with shooting at one of his neighbors.

Investigators believe Gregory Castellanos was shot in the hand by that neighbor in self-defense around 4 p.m. yesterday [October 4th] on the 1700 block of Howland Boulevard, just south of Newmark Drive in Deltona Lakes.

VCSO spokesperson Laura Williams says the 41-year-old Castellanos pulled out his gun first and fired, and that's when the 46-year-old neighbor shot back with his rifle.

"[Castellanos] confronted [the neighbor] just after [Castellanos'] young son had been throwing a ball against [the neighbor's] fence," Williams stated. "[The neighbor] asked the boy to stop and he did."

It was soon after that when Castellanos - armed with a black gun - came to his neighbor's front door, per Williams.

"The men exchanged words and when [the neighbor] saw the gun, he pushed Castellanos out of his doorway," Willams added. "Fearing for his safety, [the neighbor] grabbed his rifle and opened the door slightly, looking to see if [Castellanos] had left. That’s when [the neighbor] was met by Castellanos’ pistol pointing at his face."

Shots were fired at that point, with one of the rounds striking a vehicle driving by the scene. No one in the car was hurt, per Williams.

The neighbor wasn't shot but did manage to call 911 for help soon after getting back inside his house.

VCSO arrested Castellanos right after he was discharged from Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford, charging him with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, shooting into an occupied dwelling and carrying a concealed firearm.
