Deltona, FL - A 16-year-old Deltona High School student was charged with a felony after deputies say he claimed that he had a gun in his backpack as he walked on campus. The incident was reported Thursday morning. According to Volusia County Sheriff's Office (VCSO), the student was at the front gate of Deltona High School when the gate attendant heard the student say, "I have a gun in my backpack.” Deputies responded to the scene, and the student told the deputies that he only meant the comment as a joke. The 16-year-old is charged with making a false report concerning the use of a firearm. VCSO has arrested three other students for threats against Volusia Schools since last week's deadly mass shooting at a Broward County high school. Last Friday, a 14-year-old student at Heritage Middle School was charged with making statements in class about blowing up and shooting up his classroom (click here for more details). On Tuesday, a 13-year-old student at Taylor Middle-High School in Pierson was charged with threatening to discharge a destructive device after students heard him say he might bring a gun to school and shoot people (read more here). On Wednesday, a 14-year-old student at Deltona Middle School was charged with making a false report of a bomb after VCSO says he yelled out a threat about blowing up the school (learn more about that story here). VCSO said in a news release on Thursday, "Students who continue to make jokes or other threatening statements about guns, explosives, other weapons or other acts of violence will continue to face potential criminal charges as the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies show zero tolerance for this type of behavior."
