DeLand, FL – Within the next few months, the City of DeLand will hire a new police chief.

After collaborating with STARS, an employment agency created by the Florida Police Chief’s Association, the city has chosen 12 candidates from 80 national applicants to be considered. The city based their decisions upon both the values of the community and professionals.

From those 12, 5 or 6 will then be chosen by the Selection Committee to move on to the DeLand Committee for an interview and a town hall Q&A.  There is a proposed schedule here.

The Selection Committee includes:

  • City Manager Michael Pleus
  • Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood
  • Ray Almadovar of Stetson Public Safety
  • Tisi Blakeslee of the Alumni Association
  • Sanford City Manager Norton Bonaparte
  • Althea Chavers of the Spring Hill Boys & Girls Club
  • Clergy Chair Eugene Collier
  • Resident Paula Kelton
  • Pastor Mike Modica
  • Former City Commissioner Charles Paiva
  • Color Line Roundtable Chair Ted Small.

The City of DeLand will be updating their progress on hiring the new police chief and will keep the public up to date on town hall meetings. They hope to have the new chief by late April or early May.
