DeLand, FL - Over five months after DeLand's fire chief died unexpectedly, the city has his permanent replacement.

Todd Allen - who held the same position for the Illinois city of Freeport - will begin his new job April 15th.

"I am excited about joining the community and serving the great citizens of DeLand," Allen said. "The department has been through a lot in the last year but I feel it is headed in the right direction. I hope to help continue the forward momentum."

Dan Hanes unexpectedly died in October at the age of 59 after a cardiac issue put him in the hospital.

The 47-year-old was formally announced today by the City of DeLand in a press release nearly two weeks after holding a public meeting for Allen and the other two candidates on the list.

Allen has 27 years of experience in fire services, including administration and operations. He holds a Master’s in Organizational Leadership from Waldorf University and a Bachelor’s in Fire Administration from Western Illinois University.

Allen's wife, Heather, is a former firefighter/paramedic. Their four kids are all grown and live in various parts of the United States.
