DeLand Man Charged With Trying To Kidnap Little Boy

DeLand, FL - A DeLand man appeared to be intoxicated when he tried to walk away with a 5-year-old boy in front of his mother and other family members.

That's what the Volusia County Sheriff's Office is saying about the arrest of 26-year-old Aung Pyo late last night at an apartment building in southwest DeLand.

VCSO spokesman Andrew Gant says deputies went to the building at 300 South Spring Garden Avenue around 11:15 p.m., finding Pyo at the scene.

"The boy’s mother told deputies Pyo approached her son as he walked from their apartment to a picnic table," Gant added. "Pyo grabbed him by the left arm and tried to walk away with him."

According to the incident report, the boy's mother says no one in the family knows Pyo and they never had contact with him before then.

The boy's uncle and his mom's boyfriend helped pull the boy away from Pyo, with the former having to drag Pyo away from the apartment building a few minutes later after the child went inside, per Gant.

"After a friend took the boy into the apartment building for safety, Aung ran to the door, attempted to get inside and tried to coax the boy out," Gant noted.

Pyo is held without bond at Volusia County Jail on charges of attempted kidnapping, child abuse and burglary.
