DeLand, FL - The head of the DeLand Fire Department has died 11 days after he was hospitalized for a cardiac emergency.
59-year-old Dan Hanes passed away early this morning (October 4th) at Halifax Health Medical Center, around six months after moving to the city to take over as Fire Chief.
DeLand Mayor Bob Apgar says Hanes made a "significant, positive impact" during his short tenure.
"He was a great role model for our firefighters and became a beloved member of our DeLand family and the community," Apgar added. "The city commission and staff are devastated by his death and we extend our heartfelt sympathies to his family for their loss."
Hanes was hospitalized September 23rd due to cardiac-related issues and ended up in intensive care soon afterward.
He had over 35 years of firefighting experience, including 28 years with the city of Fort Lauderdale. He also served as the fire chiefs for the cities of West Palm Beach and Fernandina Beach.
Hanes' sons also issued a brief statement after the city announced his death.
"Words cannot express our gratitude for the love, prayers and support we’ve received throughout this difficult journey," stated Danny & Andrew Hanes.
