police lights dark car DeBary, FL-A 24-year-old DeBary man is behind bars after deputies say he hanged his mother's dog and threatened to hang himself from the same tree. David Rivera was involved in an 8-hour standoff with deputies and negotiators. When it was over, deputies say he voluntarily climbed down from the tree and was arrested on a felony charge of animal cruelty. Deputies say it started at a home on Dirksen Drive around 11 AM Thursday. Rivera's mother told deputies she and the son argued over him not having a job. She told him he would have to move out if he didn't find a job. She says that's when Rivera grabbed her 5-year-old male Chihuahua, climbed the tree and hanged the dog. Rivera insisted deputies contact the mother of his child, who lives out of state, and have her bring his son to him before he spoke with anyone else. After 8 hours Rivera surrendered. He was being held on $2,000 bail Friday morning at VCBJ. He will undergo a mental health evaluation.
