UPDATE (08-09-18): The victim is a 25-year-old man who tells police he isn't sure who shot him, according to the incident report released today by DBPD. The report also shows that he initially told DBPD not to pursue charges but then changed his mind during the interview. Earlier reporting below. Daytona Beach, FL - The Daytona Beach Police Department is investigating what appears to be an ambush-style shooting this afternoon (August 8th) near Bethune-Cookman University. The call for help came around 12:45 p.m., sending officers to the Bethune Village Market on the 800 block of Mary McLeod Bethune Boulevard. DBPD Chief Craig Capri says it looks like the shooter was handed an assault rifle from a woman sitting in a vehicle parked in the parking lot on the east side of the store and he then opened fire on another man from around 10 feet away who had pulled into that same lot moments earlier in another vehicle.
"It appears that our suspect was inside the business, waiting for our victim to show up," Capri noted. "It appears that they were set up to meet each other." The victim was shot in the left arm and stomach, but he managed to get away in his vehicle, which DBPD recovered around a mile from the scene, per Capri. That man is now at Halifax Health Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. As for the shooter, he fled the scene and DBPD is actively looking for that man, but Capri says security video at the mart was "superb" and he doesn't think it'll take long for officers to find out who he is and catch him. "I strongly predict we'll have this suspect identified very soon," Capri noted. "We're going to go all-out to try and locate him." Police found around half a dozen shell casings were scattered in that parking lot, which is just to the east side of the mart. Capri believes the men knew each other and had likely gotten into some kind of dispute before the shooting. "They didn't even talk to each other [at the scene]," Capri said. "He comes out and gets the assault rifle and just opens fire." DBPD has yet to identify the victim or the shooter or release any of the security video footage, but Capri says the victim was cooperating with them. It's also unclear what kind of assault rifle was used.
